Why does the dirt produce mud when it gets wet.

Soil mostly consists of solid particles like sand, silt and organic matter. So when soil loses air it becomes compacted making it difficult to drain water

Moisture conditions affect soil structure in many ways, too. Soil that is too wet or does not drain properly can suffer from erosion. That which is too dry can become hard and compacted. ... Sandy soil will drain water quickly but clay soil will prevent water drainage and become soggy.
