1. Why are flowers an important adaptation of flowering plants?

2. How can fruit play a role in seed dispersal?

3. How do botanists classify flowering plants?

4. You can see from the micrograph images above that the surface structure of a pollen grain is sculpted and spiky. Why do you think this is so?

5. In Hakea, the stomates are protected from direct exposure to the air by enlarged epidermal cells. In what environment do you think this adaptation is necessary? Explain your reasoning.

Answer:

  1. Flowers produce seeds needed to make more plants.
  2. Some fruits contain seeds. Seeds can spread into more seeds which lead to more fruits.
  3. They divide them into 3 groups; perennials, biennials and annuals.
  4. To protect the plant from predators.
  5. A very windy environment, because although it would be difficult to occur, the plants could get blown away.
