It began after the stock market crash of october 1929, which sent wall street into a wiped out millions of investors. Over the next several years, consumer spending and investment dropped, causing steep declines in industrial output and employment as failing companies laid off workers. There were 5 reasons to the contribute of the great depression which is stock market crash, Reduction in Purchasing across the board, American Economic Policy with Europe, and the drought conditions

The cause of the Great Depression in the United States was the stock market crash. There was also an overproduction of goods that were underconsumed (they weren't bought as much as they were being produced). Those causes contributed to the Great Depression because it bought many problems like unemployment, poverty, many people were struggling to buy food (starvation), there was race and gender inequality everywhere as well. Because of these problems, Americans started to help each other and formed organizations to help with the Great Depression.
