Mr. Bell wants to plant a rectangular garden in his backyard. He has 100 feet of fence to

enclose his garden. He wants the length to be 5 feet more than the width. What are the
dimensions, in feet, of the garden?

Here, we want to calculate the dimensions of the garden.

let the length be x ft

we are told that the he wants the length to be 5 feet more than the width;

That means the width will be (x-5) ft

Mathematically;

Since the shape is rectangular, the perimeter will be 2( l + w)

Thus; 2(x + x-5) = 100

2(2x-5) = 100

divide both sides by 2

2x-5 = 50

2x = 50 + 5

2x = 55

x = 55/2

x = 27.5 ft

The width is thus; 27.5ft - 5ft = 22.5ft

the dimensions of the garden are 27.5 ft by 22.5 ft
