now were going to get the variable and the numbers on different sides

24x - 40 + 40 = 24x

8x + 40 - 8x = 40

24x - 8x = 16x

40 + 40 = 80

16x = 80

now divide each side by 16

16x / 16 = x

80 / 16 = 5

x = 5
