James Oglethorpe received a charter for imprisoned people in England from debts. He paid for them to be farmers in Georgia with 500 acres of land. They would eventually pay him back from what they profited from farming. He wanted it to be a positive place so there were no slaves and no liquor. They farmers eventually wanted larger plantations and slaves. James said no but later gave up and in 1752 becomes a royal charter instead. The poor and small scale farmers were out of work. So probably that imprisoned people could have a chance at starting a new life. I wrote that in my own words so you betta use it
