Let x=the smaller integer.

Let x+1+ the larger integer.

x+(x+1)=173

(x+x)+1=173

2x+1=173

2x+1-1=173-1 (substract 1 from both sides)

2x=172 (divide 2 to both sides)

2x/2=172/2

x=86

x+1=87
