A submarine left Diego Garcia traveling east 5 hours before an aircraft carrier. The aircraft carrier traveled in the opposite direction going 10 km/h faster than the submarine for 2 hours after which time the ships were 110 km apart. Find the submarine's speed

the time taken by the submarine is given as 5 hours

the aircraft travels 10km/h faster than the submarine= 15km/h

time taken by the aircraft is 2hours

therefore the distance covered by both vehicles can be described using the expression below

we know that distance=velocity*time, so equating the two vehicles distance to 110km we have

5*x+15*2=110

5x+30=110

solving for x we have

5x=110-30

5x=80

divide both sides by 5 we have

x=80/5

x=40km/h

The submarine's speed is 40km/h
