How could access to water affect where humans decide to make a settlement?

It should be the last option..
If water is hard to find, it makes it harder for humans to settle in an area, because you need water for many things. Take back then in the older times for example, they needed water to grow crops & humans need water to survive as well. If the land was fertile and/or located by a river, more people tended to settle nearby. (If that makes sense, but it’s definitely the last option).
