I think of a number.

I multiply this number by 8, then subtract 66
The result is twice the number that I was thinking of.

What is the number I was thinking of?

Answer:

11

Explanation:

Set up:

8x - 66 = 2x -> Subtract 2x from either side

8x - 2x = 66 -> Simplify

6x = 66 -> Divide either side by 6

x = 66/6 = 11

The number is 11

8x-66=2x (write it out as algebra)
6x=66(put the x’s on one side)
x=11 (simplify)
