Badminton was first known as a children's game called poona in India. British officers learned to play and brought the game back to England in the early 1870s. In 1873, the Duke of Beaufort held a party on his estate, which was named Badminton. The guest loved the game and it became a popular party game.

Growing popularity

Badminton went from just a party game to becoming a serious sport and clubs were formed. In 1893, the Badminton Association was formed with 14 clubs as members. By 1934, the International Badminton Federation was formed with nine countries. This has now grown to include more than 150 countries.
