Why I advocate for community service:
Community service should be required at some point. It may seem like a hassle, but service learning is actually associated with academic gain. These same students often grow up to become voters and they build great problem solving skills. That's not even all the benefits. Many students also have a sense of self-efficacy and learn that they can make a difference in the world. Because community service creates a sense of leadership, working with your peers, finding solutions, and making students more aware of issues of social justice, community service is key.
