d= (under radical sign) (x2-x1)^2 + (y2-y1)^2

plug in the numbers and simplify and youll get (again under the radical sign) (-8)^2 + (-15)^2

do the math again and youll get -289 under the radical. square root of 289 is 17 and you add the i next to it because it is negative and those numbers aren't real
