How did the La Salle expedition threaten Spain’s presence in Texas?

When La Salle missed the mouth of the Mississippi he landed in Texas. He established Fort St. Louis which became the first French colony in Texas. Spain had already begun to colonize Texas and knew that La Salle was an accomplished explorer who had already claimed the large territory of the Mississippi basin for France. Spain became worried that La Salle would try to claim unexplored parts of Texas for France and interfere with Spanish colonization efforts. Spain was also concerned that France would be a military threat to the boarder colonies of New Spain.
