Carl and Lisa are renting moving trucks from the same company. They pay a fee of x dollars just to rent the truck and y dollars per mile they drive. Carl drives 150 miles and pays $215. Lisa drives 120 miles and pays $176.

The equation for the cost of the truck is

C = ym +x where y is the cost per mile and x is the fee

215 = y*150+ x

Lisa

176 = 120y + x

Subtract the two equations to eliminate x

215 = 150y+x

-176 = -120y -x

--------------------------

39 = 30y

Divide by 30

39/30 = 30y/30

1.3 = y

Now find x

215 = 150 * 1.3 +x

215 =195 +x

Subtract 195 from each side

215 -195 =x

20 =x

The flat fee is 20 and the rate per mile is 1.3
