You have to find a common denominator for the fractions which in this case is 6. You have to do whatever you do to the bottom to the top so since 3 x 2 is 6 and 2 x 3 is 6 the fractions change. They become 3 3/6 and 1 2/6. You subtract the fractions and get 1/6, then subtract the whole numbers that will be 3-1 and that equals 2 so your final equation is 3 1/2 - 1 1/3= 2 1/6. So the other piece of rope is 2 1/6 feet long.
