then you need to find factors of 40 that add to 14

factors of 40: 40 and 1, 20, and 2, 4 and 10, 5 and 8

4 and 10 multiply to equal 40 and add to equal 14

put each factor into a parenthesis

so now you should have (x+10) (x+4)

side note: if the number 40 was negative then one of the factors would have to be negative, this would result in (x+10) (x-4) or (x-10) (x+4)
