Answer: y = 24

CD = 32, CE = 72

===================================================

Work Shown:

CD+DE = CE .... segment addition postulate

(CD) + (DE) = CE

(y+8) + (40) = 3y .... substitution

y+8+40 = 3y

y+48 = 3y

48 = 3y-y .... subtract y from both sides

48 = 2y

2y = 48

y = 48/2 .... divide both sides by 2

y = 24

-------------------------------

Extra info:

This y value leads to

CD = y+8 = 24+8 = 32

CE = 3y = 3*24 = 72

So,

CD+DE = 32+40 = 72

which is equal to CE = 72, confirming the answer.
