Explanation:

Madison gets an allowance of $6 every week. For every chore she does, her parents give her an extra $2.50 for that week. Daniel receives an allowance of $3 a week and gains $3.25 for every chore he does the same week. How many chores would have to be done by both of the children to earn the same amount of money?

2.5x + 6 = 3.25x + 3

Isolate the variable by:

subtracting 3 from both sides

2.5x + 3 = 3.25x

subtracting 2.5x from both sides

3 = 0.75x

divide 0.75 from both sides

4 = x

In terms of my example problem, the answer would be 4 chores

Answer:

x = 4

Explanation:

2.5x +6 = 3.25x +3

-2.5x -2.5x

6 = 0.75x +3

-3 -3

3 = 0.75x

divide by 0.75 both sides

4 = x

or

x = 4
