The sum of the speeds of two trains is 717.8 miles per hour. If the speed of the first train is 6.2 mph faster than the second train, find the speeds of each.

Answer:

Speed of train 1 = 355.8 miles per hour,

Speed of train 2 = 362 miles per hour

Explanation:

Let's say the speed of the first train is x

Speed of train 1 = x,

Speed of train 2 = x + 6.2

If the sum of the both speeds are 717.8 miles per hour, the set up should be as follows;

x + (x + 6.2) = 717.8

2x = 711.6,

x = 711.6/2 = 355.8 miles per hour (first train)

355.8 + 6.2 = 362 miles per hour (second train)
