In this activity, you will write a review of The Speckled Band in which you will compare and contrast the film with the original text.

Part A:
A film review expresses an opinion about the quality of a film and gives reasons for recommending (or not recommending) it. In this activity, you will write a film review in the form of an essay. Your review should be at least 750 words. The introduction of your essay should include a strong thesis statement that conveys the main idea of your review. The main idea might be a comparison of how the film and text portray a central theme. Or it might compare and contrast a specific aspect of the film and text, such as plot, character, or setting. As you discuss this main idea in your review, be sure to cover these elements:
plot summary
setting
characterization
theme
performance of the actors

Your review should include these elements:

It should have a strong thesis statement in the introduction. Here’s an example: Although The Speckled Band is a fine film in its own right, it lacks the level of suspense and intrigue found in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Adventure of The Speckled Band.”

The body of the essay should summarize the plot and touch on elements of setting and characterization. It should also explain how the plot, setting, and characters differ in the text and in the film.

It should explain one or more of the story’s themes and how they play out in the story.

It should discuss the performance of the actors.

It should include a comparison of the overall effect of the text and the film. It should also state whether the film is a successful retelling of the original story.

The conclusion should restate and support your thesis statement.
