highland has a population of 12,200. Its population been increasing at a rate of 300 poeple per year. Lowville has a population of 21,000 and is declining by 250 people per year. Assuming the rates don't change, in how many years will the populations be equal

Equation for the Highland population

  • 12200 + 300x

Equation for the Lowville population

  • 21000 -250x

Populations are equal after

  • 12200 + 300x = 21000 - 250x
  • 300x + 250x = 21000 - 12200
  • 550x = 8800
  • x = 8800/550
  • x = 16 years
