(Forgive me, I'm not awesome at explaining). You are calculating the absolute value. For this you will be ignoring the negative sign if it is in-between the lines. Or, to simply put it, how far away it is from 0 on a number line, you can use a number line to calculate this for smaller numbers but 6,035 is waaaaay too big. So, I just ignore the negative because, for example, you wouldn't say you were -6 miles away from your house, you would say you were 6 miles away. That's kind of what we are doing here. If the negative was OUTSIDE of the lines then it wouldn't be cancelled out. Ex. -|2| it is 2 away from 0, BUT you need to add on the negative making the answer to the -2. -6035 and 0 is 6035
