2. (b) Why is it important to maintain genetic diversity in populations?

Genetic diversity encourages the health of a species and provides material resources such as plants. The loss of genetic diversity leads to reduced options for mates which means even more loss of a species and the species becomes more susceptible to disease. These are very few results that occur with the loss of genetic diversity.
