A sports shop in Manchester is doing a sale on some merchandise. Liz hears about it

and goes to make a purchase of two pairs of running shoes. She gives the sales
attendant in the store three crisp £50 notes and is given change of £10.50. What is
the price of each pair of running shoes? Show your working

Given

No. of pairs of shoes bought by Liz = 2

she gave attendant three crisp £50 notes

total money given by Liz = £50*3 = £150

Money she was returned = £10.50.

thus, the money kept with attendant is price of two pair of shoes

price of 2 pair of shoes = total money given by Liz - Money she was returned

price of 2 pair of shoes = £150 - £10.50 = £139.50

To find price of 1 pair of shoes we divide both LHS and RHS by 2

price of 2/2 pair of shoes = £139.50/2 = £69.75

price of 1 pair of shoes = £69.75 Answer
