Answer:

  • "It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time, the Japanese government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace." (logos)
  • " I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, December 7th, 1941, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese empire. " (Ethos)
  • "No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory." (Pathos)

Step-by-step explanation:

In the first paragraph shown above, Roosevelt shows an appeal to logos. The logos refer to logic and when using it Roosevelt states that due to the distance between Hawaii and Japan there is a logic that shows that it is impossible that the attack on Pearl Habor was an accident. But this distance shows that it is logical that this attack was carried out weeks ago, while Japan distracted the American government with false diplomatic and peaceful conversations.

In the second paragraph, Roosevelt uses ethos which is an appeal to ethics. In this paragraph, Roosevelt shows how, after the facts shown in his speech, it is correct and ethical for Congress to allow a declaration of war against Japan. Without Congress' permission, this will not be possible.

In the third and last paragraph, we can see that Roosevelt used pathos, which is an appeal to the emotional. At that moment, he wants to reach the emotions of his audience showing how even attacked, the American people are strong, will not surrender and will overcome this difficult moment.
