Carbohydrates and lipids have similar function. They both are used for energy but carbohydrates are short-term energy and is used first. After carbohydrates are used, the lipids are next and are the long-term energy.
Functions of carbohydrates:
-short term energy: glucose
-stored energy(plants:starch, animals:glycogen)stored in liver and muscles
-structure: cellulose cell wall &chitin exoskeleton & fungal cell wall
-made of C,H,O
-4kal/g
Monomer: mono-saccharide
Polymer: di- saccharide & poly saccharide
Lipids
-made of 3 fatty acids and 1 glycerol
-no polymer or monomer
-made of C,H,O
-9kal/g
-insoluble in water
Functions of lipids:
-storage of energy(long term:triglycerides)
-hormones ( estrogen & testosterone)
-insulation(thermal: triglycerides)
-protection (internal organs of animals) (waxes in plants)
-structure (cell membrane: phospholipids)
-E shaped
Hope this helps
