Answer:

The motivation behind Aina's desire to reconnect with her former teacher, Zhu Wenli, is simply her wanting to apologize for her childhood self having told the workers of the Chinese government that Wenli was speaking against the party. Consequently, Wenli was sent to multiple labor camps, and as a result, Aina felt a great amount of guilt for ruining the life of such a sweet, kindhearted woman. A decade later, when Aina goes to visit her teacher from childhood, she recognizes Zhu Wenli; however, she is not the same woman she was before. Aina witnesses Wenli in the middle of a street fight, haggardly and cruel. She had now been turned into a hardened, tough lady, very much unlike the delicate and shy music teacher prior to the labor camps.

Step-by-step explanation:

In Ha Jin's "A Decade," Aina wants to apologize to Zhu. When she was a child, she heard Zhu analyze a work from Mao Zedong. He used a metaphor to compare Americans to dirt. Zhu did not like this and told the children that Americans were human just like the Chinese. Aina and her friends reported Zhu, thinking they were doing the right thing. However, as a result, of this, this kind and caring woman is tortured and made to work. When Zhu comes in a decade's time, she finds that Zhu has become a course, old woman. This greatly saddens Aina, as the Chinese government has made this woman into a shell of what she once was.
