The larger of two numbers is three less than three times the smaller number. If the sum of the

numbers is 61, what are the two numbers?

Answer:

The numbers are 45 and 16.

Explanation:

Let, the larger number be A and the smaller one be B.

By question we have,

or, A + 3 = 3B

Arrange,

or, A - 3B= - 3.......(I)

next, A + B=61......(I I)

solving, from equation (I)

or, A - 3B = - 3

or, A=3B - 3

now putting this value of A in eqn (I I)

or, A+B=61

or, 3B - 3 +B = 61

or, 4B = 61+3

or, 4B = 64

or, B= 64/4

so, B = 16

now substituting value of B in the eqn just another from which we get B right now.

or, A= 3B - 3

or, A= (3×16) -3

or, A= 48 - 3

so, A= 45

Therefore, the numbers are 45 and 16.
