There are two different maps of Mathland.

The scale on the first map is 1 cm to 20 km. The distance from Algebra to Geometry is 15 cm.
The scale on the second map is 1 cm to 60 km.
What is the distance from Algebra to Geometry on the second map? Explain your reasoning.

Answer:

5 cm

Explanation:

The scale of the first map is 1 cm to 20 km.

15 cm on the map corresponds to what real distance?

We use a proportion to deal with the scale of the map.

1/20 = 15/x

x = 20 * 15

x = 300

15 cm on map 1 corresponds to 300 km.

The scale of map 2 is 1 cm to 60 km.

300 km real distance corresponds to what distance in map 2?

We use a proportion to deal with the scale of the map.

1/60 = y/300

60y = 300

y = 5

Answer: 5 cm
