using Pythagoras' identity with 2 legs x and hypotenuse 1.2

x² + x² = 1.2²

2x² = 1.44 ( divide both sides by 2 )

x² = 0.72 ( take square root of both sides )

√(0.72) ≈ 0.85 m ( to 2 dec. places )

the ends are 0.85 m = 85 cm from the top of the pole
