Explanation:

So to solve this by addition we have to add both x's, y's and the numbers on the other side of the equal sign:

x + y = 4

x - y = 2

Both y's will cancel out because we are subtracting y from y

Adding 4 +2 = 6

2x = 6 (adding both x gets 2x)

x = 3

Now that we found x we can find y by plugging it into either equation:

3 + y = 4

y = 1

We can check these in both equations:

3 + 1 = 4 4 = 4

3 - 1 = 2 2 = 2

These answers are then proven correct!
