Either x+1 is positive and then |x+1|=x+1 and the equation becomes x+1-3=5

<=> x=5-1+3=7

Or x+1 is negative and then |x+1|=-x-1 and the equation becomes -x-1-3=5

<=>x=-1-3-5=-9
