International trade, including exports and imports, supports 1.1 million Virginia jobs – more than 1 in 5. Free trade agreements (FTAs) have helped fuel rapid export growth from Virginia to partner countries. Creating and preserving quality U.S. jobs is a goal shared by all Americans.

One word. Tobacco. Tobacco was a huge industry in Virginia and was a large trading export for them, it shaped the economy that was created on tobacco, and led to the plantation culture that we know of.
