In the 1820s, when the territories of the Spanish Empire revolted in Latin America and independent states were formed, Cuba remained loyal to the king. The uprising of 1868 escalated into a conflict known as the Decade of War. The United States has not recognized the new Cuban government, and so have many Latin and European countries.
