A grocery sells green apples and red apples. On Monday, the store put 500 of each kind of apple on display. That day, the store sold 42 red apples and 57 green apples. On Tuesday, the store sold 87 red apples and 75 green apples. On Wednesday, the store sold 29 red apples and 38 green apples. Example: An addition equation using negative integers to show the total number of red and green apples sold. -42 + (-57) + (-87) + (-75) + (-29) + (-38) = -328 Write an addition equation using negative integers to show the number of red apples the store sold. Write an addition equation using negative integers to show the number of green apples the store sold. Did the store have more red apples or green apples left over? Explain.

Answer:

red apples:

number of red apples sold = -42 + (-57) + (-87) = -186

total number of red apples unsold = 500 + (-186) = 314 unsold red apples

green apples:

number of green apples sold = -75 + (-29) + (-38) = -142

total number of green apples unsold = 500 + (-142) = 358 unsold green apples

The store sold more red apples (186 ˃ 142), therefore, there are more green apples left over.
