3y-8y = 12+8

=> -5y=20

=> -y = 20/5

=>

y = -4

Explanation:

8 = 3y - 12 - 8y

Combine like terms

8 = -5y -12

Add 12 to each side

8+12 - 5y-12+12

20 = -5y

Divide each side by -5

20/-5 = -5y/-5

-4 =y
