Why can you multiply both quantities in a ratio by the same number to find an equivalent ratio? Please help I have this for homework and I am very frustrated

Multiplying by 1 does not change the ratio

Explanation:

Multiplying a/b by c/c gives the equivalent ratio (ac)/(bc) because c/c is 1, the multiplicative identity element. Multiplying by 1 does not change the ratio.
