The Siege of Vicksburg was a great victory for the Union. It gave control of the Mississippi River to the Union. Around the same time, the Confederate army under General Robert E. Lee was defeated at the Battle of Gettysburg. These two victories marked the major turning point of the Civil War in favor of the Union.Vicksburg and Gettysburg happened at the same time. Both were union victories however Gettysburg is seen as the turning point in the war. They were really both turning points in the war in their own ways. ... While the battle of Gettysburg was going on there was also a battle in Vicksburg.The Battle of Chancellorsville is considered Lee's greatest tactical victory; the much larger Union army was driven from the battlefield and suffered more than 18,000 casualties. ...
