Out of 310 students in the junior class, 224 students are either band members or

athletes in one or more sports. There are 59 juniors who are band members and 196
juniors who are athletes. What is the probability that a randomly selected junior is both
a band member and an athlete?

Answer:

1/10

Explanation:

P(band OR athlete) = P(band) + P(athlete) − P(band AND athlete)

224/310 = 59/310 + 196/310 − P(band AND athlete)

P(band AND athlete) = 31/310

P(band AND athlete) = 1/10
