Industrial land is used differently from other land uses in terms of water... dustrial land use since the early stages of industrialisation has, in many cases, caused environmental impacts on the soil and groundwater. Nowadays these industrial brownfield sites, which are often situated in well-developed urban areas, are being reused for new building projects. This process has been called “brownfìeld recycling”. At the former site of a tar factory and linoleum production plant in Brunn am Gebirge near Vienna, Austria, soil and groundwater contaminations caused mainly by residuals of tar production were detected during the starting phase of construction for a business park.
