Responses may vary but should include some or all of the following information: At first, the Southeast Indian tribes responded harshly. Because of their alliances and their feelings toward American settlement, many of the tribes sided with the British in the war of independence. They raided American towns and settlements. After independence was gained, however, they were forced to negotiate with the US government. The Treaty of Hopewell acknowledged that their lands were now ruled by the US government, and the government had the right to create outposts and move throughout their lands. This agreement set the stage for more conflict.
