Read the excerpt from the story Westward Adventures:

Chapter 1: All Aboard!

Sally gripped her sister's hand as the train filled the small platform with clouds of steam and dust. The whistle was the loudest sound Sally had ever heard, and she wished she could put her hands over her ears. She looked down at her younger sister, Beth. The little girl was trying not to cry. Sally could see her lip quivering and the tears filling her eyes.

"It'll be okay," she said, squeezing her hand. "It's going to be a wonderful adventure. Just think about how happy Father will be to see us!"

"I don't remember what Father looks like," Beth whispered. "He's been gone a long time."

"Come on," Sally said. "Let's find our seats."

"All aboard!" shouted the conductor. "Non-stop from Omaha to Sacramento."

Sally and Beth settled into the cushioned seats, their suitcases stashed under their chairs. Sally stared out the dusty window at the flat, sun-baked landscape. She wondered how different life would be in California. Their father had left them with their grandparents in Omaha while he traveled to California to seek his fortune in the gold rush. She took his last letter from her pocket and read it for the hundredth time.

"My dearest daughters,

It's been too long since we've been together. I miss you both so much. I've made my fortune and bought a house for us. I think you will like it. It's painted Beth's favorite color, and you can see the beach from the back windows. I'm sending you train tickets to bring you here.

All my love,

Father"

Select the sentence that identifies a difference between Sally and Beth.

Answer:

The answer is D

Step-by-step explanation:

A seems right, but Sally is the one who's optimistic in the story, not Beth, which means it isn't right.

B is not right because while the story mentions their grandparents, it doesn't directly say that they miss them.

C is not right, the story doesn't mention cookies at all.

D is right, because Beth directly says "I don't remember what Father looks like,"

I hope this helps
