When Beowulf learns about the terror Grendel has on Herot and Danes people, he decided to go to Herot and fight the monster. Beowulf decides to fight the monster without weapons as he learned that Grendel also does not use one. Another reason for not fighting with weapons is that Beowulf considered that Higlac will appraise him for such bravery and deem him as honorable.

Thus the decision of fighting Grendel without weapons made Beowulf think that Higlac would consider him honorable.
