Transplacental glucose transport is mediated by facilitated diffusion through specific GLUTs. A higher density of GLUTs in the MVM, together with the greater surface area, allows rapid glucose uptake into the syncytiotrophoblast and thus provides a maximal gradient for transfer to the fetus across the BM.
