To obtain this result, we work with the combination rule which explains that the total number of combinations for a set with x elements is given by the formula;

In the question above we have two sets of elements, namely, boys and girls. So, the total number of combinations we can get when this rule is obeyed is given by;

Therefore, we can have three boys(BBB), three girls(GGG), two boys and one girl(BBG), and two girls and one boy(GGB).
