Do a mini-research project on van Gogh's The Potato Eaters. Begin by studying the painting and generating three important questions that you might have about the work. (Think about your who, what, when, why, how questions.) Then, draw on at least two different sources to try and answer those questions. Use print sources by visiting the library and discussing your questions with a librarian. For digital sources, use websites ending in .gov or .edu. Once you have completed your research, write a two paragraph essay explaining your questions, why you asked them, and the answers you found.

Answer:

1. Why was this painting his best painting?

2. What inspired him to paint this?

3. Who were those people in his painting?

The painting was inspired by the lives of peasants in Neuenen, Netherlands. Van Gogh lived with them for some time and intended to present the painting with truthful rendering. The Potato Eaters shows the simple nature of life and how laymen go about things. It shows five people who are dressed alike and gathered to have dinner. Van Gogh explained in a letter that the peasants work hard to dig out the potatoes and bake them for their food. This explains that his intention was to show the hard work put by the peasants to earn their daily living and their mechanical life in the fields. I asked these questions cuz most painters paintings are a story and they paint that story to tell people it, and I wanted to know the story of that painting.
