What did unions want to fix/change about working starting in the 1800s until today?

Organized labor unions in the industrial sector fought for better wages, (their pay check scarcely covered the cost of living) reasonable hours (they often had 12-16 hour shifts) and safer working conditions (the unguarded machinery caused thousands of injuries). These unions helped stop child labor (or at least increased the eligibility age), give health benefits and help those who were injured or retired.
