Consistency. The units are generally all evenly divisible by factors of 10 (eg a meter can be divided by 100 into centimeters, or 1000 into millimeters), whereas imperial measurements are odd (a yard can be broken into 3 feet, each foot has 12 inches, and each inch is subdivided into 16ths.
