Explanation:

The first thing we want to do in this algebraic expression is to remove the known number from the side with the largest x value. In our case, it's 40, and the way we remove it is by adding or subtracting from both sides, since our's is negative we'll add it to both sides.

- 40 + 3x = x + 14

+40 +40

3x = x + 54

Now that we have put the two common numbers together were going to add or subtract the smaller x value on both sides, here it's x.

3x = x + 54

-x -x

2x = 54

This is the last step in finding our solution, here we want to divide both numbers by the number next to x, which is 2.

2x / 2 = x

54 / 2 = 27

Now that we have divided both numbers we know that our answer is

x = 27
